April 2009

1. Taking Care of Business by Megan Hart and Lauren Dane.

This is an erotic romance collaboration by two authors. It is about two women, who happen to be friends and attend the same weekend conference in a Pennsylvania hotel. The one has just broken up with a live-in boyfriend and is looking forward to the weekend in the hotel to regroup and refocus on a new future. She meets a man who works for the hotel and they have a fling. Only the fling turns into a little something more....

The other woman is having a long distance affair with a client and will be working together at the conference over the weekend. Their relationship goes to a new level during this time as well, once she breaks it to her lover that she's accepted a job transfer to a company within 2 hours of his home.

What started out as what I thought was a straightforward, predictable erotic romance ... turned out to be a really fantastic story of growth and change, and opportunity. Where taking care of business can get really romantic with the right person. Wonderfully written, sexy, and very romantic. I loved it! :)

2. Beyond His Control by Stephanie Tyler.
A Harlequin Blaze romantic suspense story involving a Navy SEAL on leave, asked by his best friend to watch over his sister who is in over her head in a lawsuit against some very powerful and dangerous people. It is a friends to lovers story that is exciting and almost bittersweetly romantic.

3. Riding On Instinct by Jaci Burton.
Wild Riders series, Book 3

I love this thrilling and extremely sexy series written by Jaci Burton. There's some suspense as the Wild Riders is a secret government agency and in this case is out to take down some unstoppable drug dealers, and there's a heated and emotional love story as well, with plenty of steamy sex. While this is probably my least favorite in the series, it is still a great read!

4. Blue Diablo by Ann Aguirre.
Corine Solomon series, Book 1

Really fantastic UF novel with unique characters, setting and story premise.  Told in the first person point of view of the heroine, Corine Solomon whose narrative voice flowed very naturally. I can almost describe this novel as a missing persons mystery with supernatural elements, laced with bittersweet romance. Can't wait for the next one.

5. The Thief  by Megan Whalen Turner. (YA)
The Queen's Thief series, Book 1

I thoroughly enjoyed reading this critically acclaimed young adult fantasy novel. The Thief is a Newberry Honor book from 2006, I believe. The setting and cast of characters are artfully described and the dialogue and story arc are both creative and clever. A plot twist that I didn't anticipate shocked me a bit at the end, and for a moment I felt it might be a bit contrived. But then I thought about how much I love the protagonist and the world so all was forgiven. I hope to read the second and third books in this series soon. The Queen of Attolia and then The King of Attolia

6. Practice Makes Perfect by Julie James.

This is a contemporary romance that is getting a lot of rave reviews lately. I won the book from Stacy of Stacy's Place on Earth blog and decided to give it a go and see what all the hoopla is about. The story is about two cut-throat, over achieving lawyers who are competing for the one spot as partner in the firm they have worked in for eight years. They don't get along very well, but will be working on a high profile case together. I imagine somewhere along the line there is a romance and they fall in love. Right now, they fight and bicker a lot... but mutual attraction is building... and not just in the physical sense. I hear there are a few really good laugh out loud moments. I could use a few of those...

I finished the book and have to say it was a really fun, sweet read. I didn't expect the little twist from J.D's past at the end and thought it was a really great touch to kind of "bring him down a level." I ended up liking him more and more at the end and loved how these two got their happily ever after.
