December 2008

I read two books this month.

1. The Windflower by Laura London.

I would have never picked up this book to read if Ciara Stewart hadn't offered to send her rare copy of this much beloved old school romance novel on a World Tour to her romance blogging friends. I'm glad I had the opportunity to experience this novel for myself. It was definitely old school, and while I was entertained fair enough, it was way too cliche for my tastes. By the time I closed the book, I was a bit baffled as to the happily ever after. I'd say there was one, if not two, more interesting secondary characters with whom I would have rather seen the heroine end up. Go figure.

2. Veil of Midnight by Lara Adrian.
Book 5, Midnight Breeds series

Consistent world building,  great characters, a suspenseful plot and a sweet romance make this series one of my favorites. This novel ranks as one of my favorites in this series, largely due to the heroine, Renata who turned out to be one of the most multilayered characters in the series, I think. She had a difficult life and has become a strong fighter in order to survive the world she was faced with. However, she also has a compassionate and vulnerable side to her that rounded her out and made her come across so realistic. The pacing of the plot and the developing romance between Renata and Nikolai was just right. Already looking forward to the next story in this series.
